Class Description:

This comprehensive 3-hour class is designed specifically for first responders to enhance awareness and understanding of mental health issues, with a focus on recognizing and addressing the signs and symptoms of mental health conditions and occupational stressors.

Participants will gain insight into the unique mental health challenges faced by first responders, including the impact of high-stress environments and traumatic exposures. The class will cover essential topics such as:

  • Understanding PTSD: Definitions, prevalence, and the physiological and psychological effects of trauma on first responders.

  • Recognizing Symptoms: Key signs to identify PTSD, including intrusive thoughts, emotional numbness, hypervigilance, and avoidance behaviors. Depression, anxiety, and substance abuse are also covered in depth.

  • Occupational Stressors: Exploring the various stressors unique to first responder roles, including shift work, exposure to trauma, and the stigma surrounding mental health.

  • Coping Mechanisms: Introduction to effective coping strategies and resilience-building techniques to help manage stress and mitigate the impact of PTSD.

  • Resources and Support: Information on available resources for mental health support, including peer support programs and professional counseling options.
